What is Teflon®?

TEFLON®, a registered trademark of DuPont®, is a fluoropolymer additive that improves products. It was created by Roy J. Plunkett, a DuPont® employee, in 1938 and is known worldwide by its trade name TEFLON®. Given where it came from and how widespread the product became on the international market, the name Teflon® eventually became the colloquial name for PTFE, in the same way that Americans call a photocopy a ‘Xerox’, the British call a vacuum cleaner a ‘Hoover’ and Spaniards call compressed fibre gasket sheet ‘Klingerit’.
Using the TEFLON® brand as a name for PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is therefore common but incorrect.
Manufactures Cusell manufactures parts both in generic PTFE and in PTFE made with DuPont® products.
